Ralph Lauren Fall 2012: Homme-age to Downton Abbey and Edward-ian Fair Isle Fashions

Supposedly inspired by Downton Abbey, Ralph Lauren's Fall/Winter 2012 collection seems really set on vintage fashion gender bending and blending. While I admit I like the Prince of Wales inspired fair isle-knickers-argyle get ups (more 1920s Edward-ian than 1910s Edwardian), and I'm generally a fan of 1910s rational dress and 20s garconne looks, some of the other ensembles are just borrowing a little too heavily from the menswear department, over-doing the 'homme'-age if that makes sense.  Anyway, I wonder how many fashionistas we'll see out on the streets bravely donning bowlers this year??

Those vests are amazing! I am particularly taken with the one on the bottom-left. I would definitely wear either or both. Although, to echo your point, Je suis un homme.

To me these don't have a lot to do with Edwardian fashions apart from a hint here and there, however one can see the 20's influence, taken...somewhere else. Things seem to elude what what nice about the 20's garconne look but to bring in some 70's garishness instead. Oh well. Still, not all is bad and I wouldn't mind at all a couple of pieces from the collection, but I would go a different way about wearing them, mixing them. The good thing about collections like this is the fact that they create trends that filter down to the more affordable clothing for everyone. yet the trouble is that if you buy at the height of the trend you end up paying a lot for dubious quality. At the moment is very difficult to find a blasted fair isle vest at a decent price. I have to wait for a trend to die out before I can buy, which renders me forever unfashionable.:)

the cloche-ier hat and hunting garb works better than the bowler-pinstripe look. That one just looks too literal. I like the crazy print mixing in subdued colours...

I've got some brown pinstripe worsted in my fabric stash, I can feel a suit coming on. Love tweed mixes and fairisle too.

L'Wren Scott's show had a vaguely 30s feel, although it was not such an overt homage. It'll be interesting so see if anything at Milan or Paris helps turn it into a full-blown trend - if the shops fill up with stuff with a 1910s-1930s feel, I'll be a happy camper.

Love this. So great. Not sure I could pull it off.

Some of it's just a bit too loud for me and one of my great hates has always been the Argyll pattern, I just loathe it! Love Fairisle though.

I quite like the whole masculine period look on a woman....the ever fabulous Marlene Dietrich...I've always wished I could pull it off, but too hour glass and short to be able to do so, I just admire it on someone else.

I hope we get some decent looking bits filtering down the line from this.

I love this collection, especially the one with the leopard and fairisle combination. A wonderful mix of textures.
I love his look, but don't know if I could pull it of myself. We will see.
