Cold Comfort Fashion

So, the weather has been flipping and flopping like mad over here! One minute it is rainy, dreary, and cool. The next, we get a burst of late summer heat.  I started planning my outfit for my evening out for a casual dinner and a cafe dessert based on the cold autumn weather that lingered for most of the day.  Suddenly, we're back to the heat, so this ensemble shall have to go back into the closet and I'll have to find something less bulky.  A note on the outfit and post title before I make a mad dash back to the wardrobe for a quick change: I guess I sort of had Kate Beckinsale in Cold Comfort Farm in mind whilst cobbling together this look. I like the finer knit of HER jumper, but I still think mine is a cozy find as well.  I have no idea why I am doing weird things with my fingers in this image.  Baronial bizarreness abounds...

A major bargain of a sweater that we *think* is indeed a 30s handknit:  The Church of Vintage
70s does 30s skirt: thrifted
1930s mustard velvet hat: eBay

This looks lovely on you. That is one of my favourite films, and books. I did a post on it a few months back - you capture that look so perfectly, I am in total awe.

Love the outfit - I'd like to snatch your lovely hat - What a beauty! As ever you're looking great :)

The weather here 's been doing the flip flop as well. I could do with some more sunshine but I am quite enjoying my warm clothes too so I am cool with the cool weather ;)

What a lovely color combination. I really like the way the yellow, green, and gray flow. Very pretty. Now, if only the weather would cooperate and get colder. We are still waiting here in Texas for a cold front. When you get yours, send her right down here...please! ;)

I LOVE that hat! :)

Thank you, Penny Dreadful, Shallow Mallow, Celestial Charms, Kate...I wasn't sure how that yellow would look on me. The skirt is this interesting browny grey color, which I thought might work better than pitch black.

The hat was a $15 steal, especially since it's velvet and from the earlier 30s (chapeaus from this time are quite tricky to find...at least in a size that fits my head!)

Penny Dreadful...I must admit, I believe I screencapped images from the film from a combination of 1930s Girls About Town's blog and your own blog post (not sure which blog this particular image came from, so if it's from yours, THANKS for posting this!). The fashion in this film has inspired me since I first saw it in the 1990s! Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words!

I THINK our cold front is on its way back here. Will try to send some down to you C.C.!

Oh how annoying, I do hate it when that happens and one has to change into something else after planning the perfect outfit!

However, there is something I'm dying to ask you about! Have you seen Boardwalk Empire, the new show on HBO yet? I was watching it last night and the 20s fashions are just to dieeee for and oh so perfect, the flapper girls being the best, naturally, so I instantly thought of you and am just dying to know if you've seen it yet, and if so, what you thought.

i LOVE this, it's absolute perfection in my book, and I've been actually thinking about getting a jumper like that made for me...
as for the combination, what can i say, i dream about it, as a matter of fact i have an ensemble my mother knitted for me after a 30'smagazine pic, and i've been looking for buttons that would be the right size and color for it: i love that mustard, but could not wear a hat like that in a million years, so the closest i'll ever get to wearing the color is probably the buttons - and i'm not even sure THAT is a good idea, but i just love the combination! any way, i haven't been lucky so far, as i need 10-12 buttons, a a large set like that is not easy to find...

Thanks, WH! Darker hunter greens have been really appealing to me lately!

Golden Girl of the West, Carys: kind thanks! Yes, both were lucky bargains!

garofit: wow, that custom ensemble sounds amazing! good luck with the button finding expedition!

Harlow Darling: OH, yay, someone else who has watched Boardwalk Empire!!!!!! Of course, because it's a Scorcese directed series, I expected it to be rather dark and gritty and violent, and it WAS! However, it was also visually stunning (every time a woman in costume was shown, I swooned. They did a great job of dressing everyone). What I REALLY liked about the first episode is that I feel like it captured some amazingly realistic aspects of the spirit of what it must have been like to live during the early 1920s on the eve of the Prohibition crackdown. They clearly did their research on the sights and sounds of the Jazz Age in America! I also think it was very interesting how they didn't suppress signs of racism (i.e. the black faced band playing on the boardwalk) and it touches on some of the complex gender and social issues of the time (the abused wife, the Women's Temperance League vs. the raucous flappers). I DIDN"T expect such explicit (female) nudity, but I'm trying to convince myself that it wasn't gratuitous. Clearly, their main target audience is hetersexual men? Heheh. Anyway, I'll close this mini-review with the statement that I thought it was cool how they mixed fictional characters with historical ones (Al Capone! Eddie Cantor! I thought the guy playing Cantor was fantastic!). What did YOU think?

Looooove this. You are wonderful at putting outfits together m'dear. That hat and knit combo is just superb. Sounds like we've been sharing weather fronts. Last week I got my winter coat out and then yesterday was 25*C! Am really looking forward to the winter wardrobe though and hate all this not knowing!xxx

Yes, it's a great source for early 30s style ideas! Here's the link to Penny Dreadfuls fabulous blog post about it. I'm in the process of making a scarf hat set like the one you'll see in Penny's first screen cap of the film

La Baroness, you look fabulous! That sweater is lovely! And adding my two cents about Boardwalk Empire = "Eddie" was PERFECT, as was pretty much everything else about the show!

Thank you all!

Can't WAIT for the next episode of Boardwalk Empire!! Hopefully "Eddie" appears again, Avalon76!

Bella, Darling L: it's getting so frustrating, isn't it??

Gemima: have no fear! I've just gotten Netflix, which likely will allow me to view J & W, so don't bother yourself too much with the DVDs if they aren't working!!
