The Curious Case of the Baronial Buttons

When I saw this adorable striped 1930s sundress in my friend's etsy shop, Garb Oh Vintage, I knew I had to make it mine.  When it arrived and I tried it on, however, I found that the navy buttons tended to sit in a spot that was a bit too --ahem-- saucy for my demure tastes, so I quickly relocated them today before my outing to Fort Edmonton Park with a few of my pals.  See below for a 'before' and 'after' of the great button transplantation :).

What a lovely dress! I totally understand why it had to be yours when you first saw it!

Oh yup good choice! That was NOT a good placement before

Haha! I can see why they thought the original placement of the buttons would be nice, but perhaps it didn't turn out quite how they'd visualised it. In any case, the new placement of them looks good and the dress is very sweet.

Great call, they were a wee bit suggestively located before indeed. They look awesome where you put them - one would never know to see the second photograph that they hadn't been there since day one.

Thanks, lovelies!! I don't often like altering my vintage too much, but in this instance, it felt right :).

Kind thanks, Galine!! :D

Transplantation was a success, dear! :D

The hat is fabulous. The whole look reminds me of French riviera.

I think it looks great with its relocated buttons! I had a similar problem with buttons on a dress of mine a while back...too suggestive!

PS I am OBSESSED with Garb Oh Vintage online...constantly pinning and pining for dresses on that site!

I am finding there's quite a bit of naughtiness in the 30's in terms of detail placement on garments. Positioning of pockets, piping, seams, accents and embellishments can/will draw the eye towards sensitive areas, and whilst the purpose of most fashions is to flatter the human body, one can't help but feel that within their means of expression the 30's really played at it. I have seen too many examples of buttons placed exactly on the nipples or seams pointing directly to the crotch area to believe it an accident. Still, they did it with class and what I interpret to be a pretty good sense of humor.

Yes, Garofit, I completely agree....pre-code fashion, indeed!!!
