Beautiful 'Brevities' Part One: 1920s

Since Valentine's Day is but a month away and I have been adding some fun vintage boudoir goodies to the shop, thought I do a post or two showcasing these beautiful 'brevities' (a term I borrowed from here).  First up, a peek at a newly listed 1920s pale pink silk step-in, accompanied by a sweetly saucy 1920s video showing one in action. Not sure what a 'step-in' is? Check out Dear Golden's post devoted to this garment.

A 'step in' was another name for a slip back in the 20s and 30s. Named so because you 'stepped into in' to put in on :) My Nana used to call her slips 'step ins' which is why I have heard the term :)

As Lauren/Dear Goloden notes, and as appears to be the case in the primary sources I've looked at (i.e. 1920s advertisements and lingerie patterns), a step-in was in face a distinct type of 1920s undergarment, also called an envelope chemise in some cases; Step-in chemises make serve slip-like purposes, but they are shorter than 30s slips and they are bifurcated (i.e. they either have tap pant-like short bottoms or as is the case with the one in my shop, they have an inner strip that makes it necessary to step into the bottoms rather than slip over one's head; hence, the terms step in vs. slip (on)

Ahhh cool. Yes, I do recall the older 'step in's that she still had floating around from the 20s having the tap-pant like bottoms. If I only I could go back in time to being 6 years old and not letting her throw all her original vintage clothes away. Haunts me that she had wardrobes full of it up until I was around 12. I used to try everything on and swoon...sigh.
