Blanket Coats

OH, I could use a warm blanket coat right now.  This pattern from Wearing History would be ideal!  Maybe it's because I'm Canadian or because I used to work for the HBC, but I especially love the Hudson's Bay fabric used in the hooded coat at left below.  This pattern is much chicer than the shapeless Bay blank coat hipster actress Rachel Bilson was snapped wearing.

Ack. I've been dying to get Lauren's newest pattern, but am trying to (impatiently) wait until after Christmas. hehe! The idea of making it out of a blanket is so neat--I'm definitely on the hunt for a suitable candidate to chop up! ;)

I've got an old forest green wool blanket from L.L. Bean, about 25 years old, that is tempting me....but it's a solid color, and that just seems so ordinary! And I have placed a hold on buying any more patterns and fabric until I sew up some of the things that have been waiting for me on my sewing table...sigh.

The coat Rachel is wearing looks like it's made of polar fleece; it doesn't drape right for wool. But she's probably in California, where she doesn't really need an Arctic-weight jacket!

This looks so cute! But as I have two of Lauren's patterns already in the to do pile, I don't think I'll be up for it any time soon. :(

I've got a pile of patterns as well, but I am so tempted by this blanket coat idea, too, Casey!!

Nancy, I did some sleuthing and it looks like Rachel was wearing one of the HBC "point blanket" coats put out in 2009 http://www.hbc.com/hbcheritage/history/blanket/outerwear/. I have to go back and double check the image source, but I believe she was wearing it while in Toronto at some point last year?

Stephanie Lynn: copy that!!

Okay, the image is from early this year, taken during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC. Rachel Bilson is wearing the "Smyth" Bay Point Blanket swing coat, which was indeed made of wool HBC blanket fabric. Who knew?

The hood and belt makes it. You must make one!

That pattern is pure hotness, I agree.

I love the pattern - the pixie pointed hood is so sweet. Chic AND warm!

Yes yes yes, the hood and belt are totally what make it. GREAT pattern, Lauren! Must ask for a gift certificate from your shop for Xmas, so I can start on this beauty in the New Year!!
