Eureka! Just spotted a copy of a 1940s ribbon dress pattern for sale on Etsy: and the original in the pattern book image was modeled and created by Joan Crawford, no less! I've also found images of ribbon dress patterns from the 50s and 60s. Clearly, this was more than a passing fancy!

Just a thought: I've noticed you don't give the name of the ebay sellerfor the pictures you post (saying only, auction over, ebay), while au contraire, yo do give info. about Etsy shops. I'm wandering whether it has to do with some ebay policy? or is a personal choice.
I can only imagine what it must be like to use this pattern to make a dress. If anyone does, I'd love to know more!
Hi, Laos! Usually when I post pictures of items from ebay, I screencap them and then later post the image after the auction has ended, so posting a link to the ended listing becomes useless. Sometimes, I simply lose track of where in the giant web that is ebay I first screencapped the item. On occasion, you'll see that I do put links to an ebay auction if it is still ongoing and I've remembered to record the listing url. SO usually, it has more to do with the fact that as an Etsy seller, I am on Etsy more often, I am better able to keep track of items, photo sources, urls, etc.
Ok, thank you for your kind explanation And I must say your blog is very inspirational! Lady, you're to "blame" I've become 30s vintage obsessed :)

THANKS, Hep kitten!!
So cute!
My mother has copies of Hawaii Farm and Home from 1937 and 1949, and one of them (unfortunately, I don't remember which year) has an image of a ribbon dress that a girl in Hawaii made for a sewing contest and won first prize for - the magazine calls it completely original and has a whole article on it.
I wonder if I can convince Mum to give me the magazines next time I go home...
At the very least I'll take pictures and post about them.
