Never Say Never...
Further to my post/"comments" section rant about my slight unease regarding the rather excessively prescriptive and restrictive Codes of dress put forth by the organizers of the upcoming Gatsby Picnic in California, I bring you the following visual. One of the hard and fast rules set out by the organizers is that attendees is "Please, no fishnet stockings. These were worn on the stage only and would've been considered bizarre with regular dress." However, please note the following illustration from a fashionable magazine from 1932, depicting very elegant ladies wearing fishnets as part of chic daywear, in a picnic-perfect outdoor setting no less. The lady at right is not wearing gloves either! GASP! Maybe that's why the other two dames are turning away from her. (Feel free to make up mock dialogue for this illustration hehe). Not trying to be a "know-it-all" Baroness, but just putting this out there as an example of the fact that the more prescriptive or restrictive one attempts to be about vintage fashion, the higher the likelihood that an exception to such codified rules shall emerge. In short, "never say never."

Trixie, in all seriousness, I would probably really enjoy the event and find myself relating very well to the organizers and attendees. I'm probably just taking out my mild envy on the text of the website ;) I think it's just my typical reaction to the word NEVER. Modifiers are a girl's best friend, people (often, seldom, sometimes)...teehee
by envy I mean, envy over the geographical impossibility of me attending this event. If any readers are going, have a WONDERFUL time. be sure to give us the dirt on what happens there when you return ;)

eek! i had no idea about the fishnet no-no, and they say it as if it's commonly known fact...
i would so get the cold shoulder, in fact i would be far too scared to attend...
personally i like fishnets as they make my legs look thinner while still letting the skin to breathe and i prefer the effect to that of plain black stockings
Did they specify ALL fishnets? Sometimes people come in the stereotypical red dress with fringe and the black fishnets. I know they dont like that. I personally love the nude fishnets in warmer weather!

Wow, I never knew that about fishnets either, I like them with the dress in the picture.
I try and be authentic with my look but I have just as much fun mixing different eras and styles.

Trixie: I quoted what they had written verbatim "No fishnet stockings." I too really think the nude ones are fun (there you go, now we know they would be period appropriate!)

I could have bought a pair of 30's fishnet stockings but I passed them up because I didn't want to/couldn't wear them. Now I wish I picked them up for reference if anything. :-/
If you ever find another pair, let's send 'em as evidence to the Gatsby society hahaha

Åh, all these know it alls... Personally I´m discovering that, although I love the 1940s, Im buying 1950s and even 1960s clothes too as long as they make me feel elegant and timeless. And isnt that what this picnic should be all about? Hope you go - fishnet stockings and all!
See, this is why I love the word 'rarely' so much. It covers such a multitude of sins! Victorian women 'rarely' laced their waists down to 16 inches. 18th century women 'rarely' went outdoors without a hat.
Rarely is a good word!
