20s Argyle Legwear Look

On one of my many internet excursions, I came across this amazing 1920s illustration depicting a stylish set of sporty gals wearing the most fabulous argyle-y plaid stockings.  By coincidence, I spotted some tights on the Anthropologie website that are close enough in style that one could get a similar look.  (Side note: can you believe I have NEVER been inside an Anthropologie shop and this was my first visit to their website? Yep, tis true! My excuse: this company has not been in Canada all that long).  Anyway, what do you think of this legwear look?  Adorable or horrible? Note that brown with yellow and yellow with brown, a chic 30s combination, was clearly au courant in the 20s as well!  Goodnight, lovelies!

I think the tights are adorable with the right outfit on the right person!

I really like this! The illustration is beautiful and the first set of hose from Anthro is my favorite. Their stores are so expensive now, but I love the sales section at the one nearest me. Its huge and I've found some wonderful deals there. I find the website good for inspiration as well and am a big fan of their shoes.

I've had really good luck with the Anthropologie legwear so I say go for it! They also have really great sales where you can find vintage inspired skirts/blouses/etc to mix into a vintage wardrobe, and then there's the dangerous shoe section...

Oh wow, I have a pair of argyle tights almost exactly like that! This makes me want to wear them again.

Oh dear... I just had a peek at their legwear. I may be in trouble if I find my way to the store. *love* the ones you posted, as well as the mademoiselle pair with the little bows.

I love it in the illustrations better than the tights (but they're still pretty nifty). =D

This post is reminding me that the hunt for warm stockings will be fast approaching. Have you been to http://www.sockdreams.com? For some reasonb I want to say that you have already recommended that site to me though!

A purist would only wear them with a golf outfit. ;-)
I'm not purist and those stockings are great. Personally I'm very cautious wearing anything patterned on my (bicycle) calfs. But I wear any colour exept white for the above reasons.
Here's an informative read from Fuzzylizzie, which you might have seen already.

I like it - though I think this stockings will look better on slender legs than on athletic ones - but for you having very pretty ankles I think these will look great on you!

er.. I hope you don't feel offended - the comment about athletic legs was generally speaking.. oohh.. my English stinks.. I'll hang my head in shame! :"(

Oh! I had the pair in the middle picture (when I was slimmer and had slender pins).

Enjoy the Anthropologie website - it's fun discovering new treasures isn't it?

As cute as they are, I have never been a fan of patterned stockings for myself. Maybe because I'm so short, I just think they look too busy on me.

Looove Anthropologie! I get into too much trouble there, tho. ;)

They look great in the illustration but on real legs a bit... um... well, maybe they look okay on people with slim knees, but every time I buy patterned tights I regret it. Only yesterday I fell in love with some tights with cream and black horizontal stripes of different widths, very sixties, but they looked awful on my short legs and wide knees :(

Good point, gals! I personally have never tried such legwear, so this is some useful info to keep in mind before I buy any such things (though I must admit that in some circles I suppose I have been called lucky to have inherited my mum's virtually calf-less stems, which used to annoy me as they always helped make my ample hips even more ample, but maybe in this instance such legwear actually might make me look like I have some definition/shape to my "pins" as you called 'em, Juddie. More likely, they'll look nothing like the illustration on a real body!

I must agree that the ones on the flapper are the best-est ones...

Lolita: thanks for the link. DROOLS. PS: I'll bet you could rock any look you tried, but at any rate, you are a 40s goddess!

From the sounds of it, ILIVEINMYLAB and Rapunzel, I must tread carefully when I actually go into the Anthro shops ;)

Pixie: I bet you look darling in yours. You should totally dig 'em out and wear 'em about!

superheidi: thanks for the link as well! You are so sweet to forward such wonderful info.

Wearing History: yes, those bow ones are DARLING!
