Garden Girls: The Original Vintage Outfit Posters

For a while now, I've been collecting random images from the web of photographs depicting women posing in settings that look very much like their own front or back yards.  While I was originally drawn to them as examples of "real" 30s fashion, it struck me that it may be that I love them because they depict women posing for outfit photos that are very much like the ones we vintage fashion bloggers often take in our own backyards.  While these women were likely out posing to record a personal or family record of how they looked on the day of a special occasion, whereas we bloggers create our daily outfit posts with the goal of sharing our ensembles with the online world, I feel like the impulse to capture that important but ephemeral mode of self-expression known as fashion connects me to these women in a wonderful way!

Oh, what loveliness! Brought a smile to my face. And the light in these old photos, I can't get enough of it, it's as if the light somehow contains the key and essence of happiness.

I love these photos and you are so right about the original outfit posters. If they had internet, I bet they'd put these pics on their blogs! :)

This really makes me want to throw on something floofy, breazy dress and play in the yard. Thanks for sharing!

I think the notion of women wanting to "capture fashion" is timeless and I love how you made to connection between this old photos and what we vintage bloggers are doing in our own time. I too have a great fascination with this old photos, not only as inspiration for dressing, but for their beautiful nostalgia as well. Great post!

I totally agree these gals would have been blogging fashionistas with the right technology! I imagine all these photos were taken by other people (the camera timer can't have been around yet....UNLESS, they had those old manual type thingies attached to the cameras. I'd LOVE it if some of these were self-portraits ;)). Anywhoo, it was a cool feeling to come across these (I especially love that first one as well). I agree: they capture beautiful fashion, amazing lighting, and the spirit of bygone eras and people.
