In The Wasteland, T. S. Eliot wrote, "April is the cruellest month . . . ." Considering that the weather this week alone has gone from fabulous to freezing in the blink of an eye, I can't help but agree! I was planning to take some photos outside but I decided to stay in, just in case some snowflakes start falling or something--that's how cold the wind feels today! Sigh. You can't stop a girl from trying to be optimistic that warm weather WILL soon be here to stay! As preparation, I tried to figure out what to wear with this lovely 30s aqua sweater this spring. I actually wore it out on Sunday with a navy skirt, but my husband kept telling me it looked purple next to the sweater, so I pulled out the off white skirt from a 30s suit I bought earlier this year from Solanah on Etsy and thought that might clash less (got the idea from the lovely gal from a 30s knitwear pattern, shown below). I also thought I'd walk around the house for a while in my slightly tight 40s two tone pumps, just to get them less painfully snug, so I can actually wear them for longer durations! They still seem to pinch, though. Any suggestions on how to stretch these babies (aside from investing in shoe stretchers)? Also, any thoughts on what else in terms of colors of skirts or trousers I could wear this lovely aqua with? Help!? |

lovely!!
I do think a pair of shoe stretchers is a great investment. I have feet that are sometimes too wide for normal but not wide enough for wide width, so i use my stretchers a few times a year. it's the right tool for the job.
I've also put on thick socks and worn them around the house to stretch them out with a little success. You can use stretching spray but i would test in an inconspicuous spot first so color doesn't bleed.
I do the sock trick. Takes awhile but usually works
I am GREEN with envy over this lovely ensemble! I'm a sucker for a sweet cloche, I covet your shoes, and you're wearing my very favorite color combination! I mostly wear aqua with cream, beige, tan, and peach, but love it best with cream. It's a very "crisp" combo.
Shrinky Inky has suggested things that I would have suggested re: shoe stretching at home. You can also take them to a reputable shoe repairman and have him stretch them for you. I used to sell shoes and we sent people to our local repair guy for shoe stretching all the time.
Cream is probably the best colour combination because it lets the aqua top take center stage, but you could probably also wear it with a soft brown or camel colour, or a light grey. (I'm getting a wool skirt in the exact same colour, so this is actually a really pertinent question for me).
It looks gorgeous just like that though! At least you found one way to wear it!
Some shoe repair shops still have stretchers, you could ask around and see if any of your local shops would do it for you. I have really narrow feet, but my pinky toes stick out. When I bought my last pair of oxfords, the girl at the store offered to put them in the stretcher that they had in the back room. It really did the trick.
I love your outfit. Its so fresh and pretty. The knit is just gorgeous.
Oh, I am loving this ensem! It is so chic, and the cream looks perfect with the aqua. I agree that camel might go as well. Fun color to experiment with!
Definitely a camel colored skirt---but the cream looks fantastic. I love your sweater!
April *is* the cruelest month in Texas---one day it's cool in the mornings & evenings and oh so very spring-like. The next day, it's 90F outside (by Friday is what they are saying) and summer has arrived early, as usual. *sigh*

April is the cruelest month in the southern hemisphere too - the dread of knowing winter is coming soon.
I love the aqua and cream, but also think it would look good with grey. And I must compliment you: I usually loathe aqua, but that sweater is very fetching!
I completely agree about the weather, it's the same over here in BC. It has been so lovely then suddenly it decided to get really cold and hail, stop hailing but stay really cold. And I'm not enjoying it.
I love that sweater! I'm at a loss for any other colors as well though. However I think the cream looks just darling. And those shoes are orgeous! I'm not sure what to do about stretching them though? I have the same problem with a pair of my shoes.
Send those shoes to me I'll wear them... errr stretch them for you:-)
aqua looks great with mid brown or raspberry
Thanks for the tips and tricks and color pairing suggestions!!!
I must say this color of aqua bluey green is rather difficult for me to wear. I have to layer on the powder bronzer so as not to look sea sick. Ah well, small measures for sartorial pleasures ;)
It's a difficult color for sure, but on you it look marvelous!
I agree it would look good with a light, soft brown.
Kind thanks, garofit!
