Traces of The Thin Man

Love the look of the fashions in the Thin Man movies?  I sure do.  Some last-minute holiday gift ideas for the Loy and Powell lovers in one's life:

Oh Boy, Myrna Loy!

Every year around this time, I re-watch The Thin Man.  Every year, after seeing Myrna Loy in the famous Xmas shopping scene (screencapped below by Casey over at Elegant Musings), I dig my favourite Persian lamb trimmed 30s skirt suit out and try a sartorial homage to the lovely Nora Charles, Loy's character in the film.  If it was a little warmer out, I would totally wear this ensemble around town whilst doing my winter holiday errands.

Mostly Myrna

I'm looking forward to the upcoming release of the book, Myrna Loy: The Only Good Girl in Hollywood.  Isn't the cover itself gorgeous?

In other (somewhat related) news, I've heard buzz that Johnny Depp wants to team with Rob Marshall to do a remake of my all-time favourite vintage movie, The Thin Man.  If you follow my twitterfeed, you may have noticed some of us back and forthing about the prospect.  My first thought was: nooooooo, Don't even bother!  My next thought was: well, if you really have to try to mess with perfection via a remake, please let someone else other than Johnny Depp play William Powell's character, Nick.  

It's not that I don't think Depp is amazingly talented and perennially gorgeous.  I just think the role calls for someone more distinguished & dapper & wry.  My casting suggestion:  John Slattery, the chap most recently known as Roger Sterling on Mad Men.  IMHO, he has that perfect "insouciance," that mix of blithe languour and boyish spriteliness, not to mention that (feigned?) ability to hold his liquor hehe (Depp's played a lush, too, but if he DOES play Nick, he MUST find an alternative way to play a dipsomaniac--i.e. he'll definitely have to dump that cute but unsubtle "drunk-on-rum" Jack Sparrow slur).  

As for who should play Nora, well, I heard a rumour that Rachel Weisz is in serious contention.  She definitely has the looks to play the "lanky brunette with a wicked jaw" but could she bring the sass and class?  Maybe!  Interesting (though somewhat offputting) to ponder this remake prospect--though there's no question in my mind that Nora's costumes in the remake will never come close to the perfection of the Dolly Tree-designed ensembles in the original.  What are YOUR thoughts?

Meet the "Myrna"

Speaking of Myrna Loy, HOW did I not know of the existence of these Re-mix vintage-inspired shoes, dubbed the Myrna, until so recently!? Not sure whether this yellow colour is the one I'd choose, but in any colour, I'd wager these are just STUNNING on.

Okay, I think you get the point. My brain is on vacation. Like Myrna Loy's Connie Allenbury in Libeled Lady (which I'm off to watch now), I want to hide under a big sunhat on the deck of a cruise ship bound for some warm locale with a good book, and I want to stay that way until July!

Not only do I love polka dots but I am a huge fan of other graphic printed vintage fabric (esp. white on black). More Myrna to illustrate: large checks. Of course the adorable chapeaus and neck bows only add to my adoration of these looks.

Okay, enough nudey flappers; time to put some frocks on that gal. I adore Myrna Loy and like many, I've coveted the striped clothing she wore in The Thin Man for a long time. Funny, I've just spotted two "Myrna-esque" 1930s dress on Etsy for sale. Close, but no cigar for me. I'm gonna keep searching, but these are still lovely.
