Back to the Beach

A recent warm weather jag had me returning to dreamy photos of early 30s beauties lounging on the beach in places like Deauville.  This led me back to my perennial muse, Renée Perle, which in turn led me to stumble upon a Renée Perle (as photographed by Jacques-Henri Lartigue-inspired fashion photo spread in German Vogue from 2007.  To me, the original Renee's style was effortlessly perfect, but thought I'd share some of these modern interpretations (in non-sequential order).

Oh my, the Dolce&Gabbana sailor pants are amazing! But what´s it with the model? She looks like she´s got a very bad day after and not like she´s enjoying her day in the sun. Strange concept for the shooting.

These are lovely!! Thanks for sharing. It's fantastic how many decent approximations of '30s resort wear are available on the high street right now-- palazzo pants and nautical stripes, here I come!

I actually think it's a good job overall and not a completely unsuccessful channeling of Renee. I particularly like photos no 5 and 7. Still, there is an element of artificiality that is not to be gotten away from. And the nails are scary. Here they failed Renee completely. Square nails, the thought of it!

I'm always happy to see vintage inspired fashion spreads and I think they did a good job in catching something of the spirit of the look. The original is, however, simply beyond compare. I love those ultra-wide trousers!

wow, it's amazing that the whole spread could easily have been taken from the current issue of Vogue!
