Gosford Park Fashions

Now that I have Netflix, I can feebly attempt to share screencaps of my favourite fashion moments from the movies I adore.  Example: the 2001 movie, Gosford Park.  This film is at the top of my fave list for several reasons: 1) I love the way it is both an homage to, and an ironisation of, the manor house murder mystery genre (in books and film); 2) I think it is spectacular in the way it provides a subtle but distinct portrayal (and critique) of the British class system in the early 1930s.  3).  It is absolutely FILLED with dreamy 30s knitwear, suits, and coats.  Of course, there are some stunning evening gowns as well, but I am more drawn to the richly colored daywear (I LOVE that the garments and the colors they have been made in are period perfect).

Knit Fit...

Cream ruffle collar knitted top, long cardi, tweed skirt, opaque stockings = YUM

Gorgeous oatmeal swagger sweater coat with beautiful buttoned tabs.  Ruffled blouse with butterscotch brooch.  Rust v-neck jumper layered over.  Matching tweed skirt (not seen in this pic)

Unique color block sweater in moss green, grey, yellow. Worn over peter pan collared blouse and pearl necklace finishes the look.

Warm brown and butterscotch jumper. Beautiful pattern.

My favourite ensemble in the whole film: color block jumper in rich burgundy with a mauve-grey geometric patterning.  Matching wool skirt.  Lovely neckscarf (more on that in another post)

Cute cloche, greyish green and grey sweater with dark green and golden striped scarf

Suits and coats
Hunting party tweeds, furs, hats

Gorgeous rust suit

Beautiful in browns

Delish coat

I just watched this yesterday! Love the clothing in this movie.
I got to see some of the originals at the FIDM exhibit for film costumes when I was in school there. A lot of them looked like originals. Beautiful stuff.

Lovely! You should do a companion post on La Regle du Jeu!

One of my favourite period movies, the attention to detail is very good, esp the difference between the classes

I absolutely love this film. I've watched it so many times. I don't like it much as a murder mystery, really, but love it for your #2 and #3 reasons. =] I've been meaning to screencap it properly for ages, now.

I agree with you 100% about the outfits in that movie. The plot to me was sadly a huge snore. Not even Ryan Phillipe could wake me up.

If you liked Gosford Park you might also like Downton Abbey, currently showing on UK ITV, DVD out November. It is a mini series, but also written by Julian Fellowes and set in similar period (perhaps 10 years earlier?), again with plenty of below-stairs action to augment the aristos' misery, and lots and lots of lovely clothes.

Twenty-first sentiments are bolted on, as they are in GPark, and again you would never confuse this with something written contemporaneously, but who cares with that wardrobe & those interiors to drool over.

It's just my perennial go to film for 30s fall inspiration!

Tilly, Mrs. Exeter, thanks for the titles! I watched La Regle du Jeu AGES ago. Must see if I can get some screencaps of the fashions and write a review of sorts. Will see what I can see of D.A., as well. Sounds like my kind of thing!

Wearing History: How amazing you got to see the wardrobe up close and in person! I'll be that white and black evening gown Kristin Scott Thomas wore in the film was front and centre!

PS. Just found a drawing of you by an artist that The Clothes Horse featured on her blog: http://www.etsy.com/listing/49019047/cinta-print-of-original-charcoal-and. It's uncanny!!!

oh, wow, Tilly, that is SO sweet of you to say...! I ADORE that artist, so to find a resemblance between me and one of those heavenly creatures is really really flattering!!!!!!!!!
