For over about 200 years, muffs have been a fashionable way to warm one's hands whilst participating in outdoor winter activities like sleigh rides or skating or promenading. Here's a sampling:
Muffs are so marvelous. They have the most charming Victorian/Edwardian element to them, but can very easily be worked into slightly later looks, too. I've been hunting for just the right vintage one for years (I have a cute modern one, but not a vintage one yet). Not too much luck yet, but I'm sure the right one will turn up.

I need a muff! I remember they had them in Madeline (the kid show about the French girl) and I wanted one :)
Ooh I do love a muff, me! My granny Kiki left me an incredible vintage fur one which I get wear every winter for special occasions.
