A Frock for Fair and Foul Weather

Those of us who live in regions that get all four seasons know how hard it is to pack up our lovely lighter garments and peep toe footwear to get ready for the colder weather.  Recently, I got this amazing 1930s cotton plaid dress, but our weather here in Edmonton has been flip-flopping so much between fair and foul (it even snowed once already), that I thought it wise to start planning how I can get a few more wears out of this cutie before the winter.  What do you think? Do I do ok by adding the red beret, dark sweater & hosiery and boots?  Obviously, on colder days, I will add a coat (I got a peacoat!!).  How do you make your fair weather frocks work when the cooler temperatures come?

This dress is marvelous!!

As for making fair weather dresses work as it cools down, I often pair things with cardigans and hats too. Or a 40s jacket that is from a suit set.

Something about plaid screams "fall" to me, so I think it works perfect!

I love this! It's so cute! I'd do a white sweater/top underneath the dress & then another layer of the black sweater & wool or thermal lined tights when it gets colder! It's so cute though! I'm going to have to figure out how to start styling all of my summer items for a colder climate soon too!

I like to wear a cami under my dresses just for one extra layer and I wear colored leggings over my tights when it gets really cold!

Lovely dress, Chicago weather is cooling down too so I've dressing similarly to you and pairing mine with cardigans, berets, sweater tights and tall boots. I have also been wearing a lot of blazers/40s suit jackets over my dresses for a tailored look.

The dress looks great with the cardigan and beret, and those boots are just gorgeous too :)

Looks so pretty! When it's really freezing, -35 degrees, I wear about max. 5 pairs of tights when I'm wearing my frocks in the winter.. :D And sure I wear cardigans and berets (or fur hats) too, and wool socks.

I say go for it! It looks cute both ways, plus the bright red will certainly help offset the dreary weather.

Winter wool clothes are hard to find... Of course you second option looks great!
I can add wool stocking, a slip underneath and a sweater with my summer dresses in order to wear them in spring or autumn... but it's usually not enough for cold winter.

The dress is absolutely lovely and looks perfectly adorable with both sets of accessories. I love the boots!

Definitely! You did wonderful - and look wonderful, I should add. The size of spring/summer wardrobe now surpasses my fall/winter one, so instead of splitting the two, I'm trying to wear warm weather pieces throughout the colder months now, too, and will no doubt be putting together similar outfits in the months to come.

I think it's more than ok to add the beret and the cardi. Your haircut goes so extremely well with berets. You're looking very beautiful. Hugs from Miss Maple

You look adorable! I typically just wear cardigans, thick tights, and rain boots with my thinner dresses.

Wonderful dress! Love the beret as well. Are you back in Edmonton permanently or just visiting? If you care to have coffee while you're in town, feel free to drop me a line! Laurie@retro-reporter.com
